Finally! After many months of waiting Gabriella has come! Genie and I kept asking each other
during the pregnancy if it really felt like we were going to become parents. Well, that is it. There is a difference between knowing that we are going to become parents and actually being parents. For me it happened in an instant. All the months of anticipation did not prepare me for seeing Gabby (short for Gabriella which is Hebrew, "God is my strength") for the first time. It was an amazing experience.
The middle name
Gabby’s middle name is Lince, which is the maiden name of my mom’s mom. The main reason we chose that name is because Gennie did not like many names. Even before we knew that we were pregnant we had this little exchange once in a while and it continued during the months of pregnancy.
I would say, “How do you like this name for a girl?” Gennie would say, “It’s an old ladies name,” or “It’s too common,” or “Do you see a 60 year old lady having that name?” I even got, “ That is the name of a girl I really disliked from high school,” or simple, “I don’t like it.” This happened literally hundreds of times! It almost became an obsession for me. Any time I saw a name while reading a book I would ask Gennie, “How do you like Azade?” that was the name of one of the characters from the books “Great and terrible” “How do you like Chloe (1 Corinthians 1:10-11)?” or “How do you like Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5)?” Etc… I was driving her absolutely crazy!
Finally I started going through maiden name names in my family and it was very surprising to hear Gennie say that she liked Lince. By the way, Lince is also the Spanish word for a type of cat (wild cat) native of the Iberian Peninsula. Those who know Gennie know of her love for cats so it’s very fitting! Also the word Lince is used in Spanish to describe an astute or smart person. My family in Mexico loves the fact that we using Lince as the middle name. It is not common at all to use last names as given names.
